I decided to rate the two movies together since they both received the same rating; and, both films are very similar. (Fortunately there isn’t a Matrix to Matrix Reloaded drop off.)
Both of these films are full of cheesy dialogue, flashy cars and parties, and predictable pacing. However, the choreography of the action sequences is fantastic. They reminded me of scenes from The Raid and scenes of old Jackie Chan/Jet Li. Let’s be honest, you’re going to see John Wick for action – not a cinematic masterpiece – and since it masters the genre that it claims to be, it gets high marks.
As mentioned above, the action scenes are incredible. Can they be a bit much? I think so, some of the scenes could be 1-2 minutes shorter, but overall they still provide that spark. And trust me, the nightclub scene in John Wick and the catacombs in John Wick: Chapter 2 are a stunning.
As mentioned in other reviews I always enjoy a good audio score. I thought the gun sound effects were used well, the music definitely set the pace to match the action, but overall nothing extremely memorable in the audio department.
Finally, as it must be brought up again, these films do not try to be something they’re not. There is no forced love interest, just a hint light humor, and John Wick actually runs out of bullets. I admire that. Hollywood tries too hard sometimes, this film doesn’t.
IMDB has John Wick rated as a 7.2/10 and John Wick: Chapter 2 as a 8.3/10. I rated both films as 8/10. Now, I will say that John Wick is closer to a 7.2 than a true 8 – the villain is weaker than John Wick: Chapter 2. However, John Wick: Chapter 2 does what few films can, improve on the first movie but still create a whole new experience.
