San Diego, California, USA

Price: 4 (expensive but not outrageous)

Would I return? Yes.

Located in Southern California, San Diego is a shining star for the state. It contains a world famous zoo, breath-taking views of beaches and mountains, fantastic food, and of course some of the most laid back and intriguing people in the country.

When talking about this city it is difficult to describe the experience of spending time here. When you arrive and you look around you get the feeling that living a simple life is the way to go. You leave feeling relaxed and I promise it will help you recharge your batteries – even if you are active while there. In fact, traveling to San Diego is what helped me start this website.

My girlfriend and I stayed with my sister at her house in Ocean Beach. I strongly recommend staying in OB if you get the chance. The restaurants around there are great and the views are phenomenal. I recommend Hodads (of course), Ragland Public House (great pretzels, burgers, and beer), OB Noodle House, for breakfast OB Donuts, and for a great dessert place stop by Lighthouse Ice Cream. My sister also recommended Mike’s Taco Club for some great fish tacos.

My recommended must do activities:

Cabrillo National Monument, which includes the beautiful tidepools (the picture for the article), as well as the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. This is a beautiful area, and it allows for a nice stroll lasting just a hour or 5 – whichever you prefer.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. I strongly recommend driving to the top first – this is coming from someone in shape –  you don’t miss much scenery and it is very steep. The Natural Reserve offers several trails, none of which are too difficult, but yet they provide amazing views of nature and breath-taking cliff views of the beach.

Mount Woodson. This is a much longer trail, and one that I suggest packing plenty of water for. However once you get to the top there is a potato chip rock, which I suggest googling, and the views of the mountains really do make you stare.

San Diego Zoo. The world famous San Diego Zoo lives up the billing. I suggest starting with a free bus tour, and the spend the rest of the time at the exhibits. I don’t have much to add since most people have been to a zoo, but even just the scenery and the drive to the park creates a fun experience.

USS Midway. For someone who had never been on a US Navy ship the Midway offered fantastic insight to the life of a sailor. Touring this aircraft carrier was well worth the price of admission.

I realize most of my activities are centered around nature, which is not the norm for me, but if those do not fit your style the city does offer plenty of city events. Little Italy has great food and makes for a fun night; and the Gaslamp Quarter offers nightlife for those who enjoy it.

Lastly, please comment about wanting to contribute to the site if you have any stories you want to share. San Diego is amazing and I strongly recommend anyone, no matter age or gender, to visit this paradise! Thanks for reading.
